Searching for a Rational Cure
The Trust was conceived at the Nikolas Symposium in the 1980's. The Nikolas Symposium is a "think tank" funded by the Kontoyannis family invited list of world-class specialists and as the network grew and the understanding and ideas emerged it became apparent that money was required if answers were to be found. Hence, in 1991, the Histiocytosis Research Trust was established in the UK to raise money for research, and to set up an independent scientific review board to ensure that scarce funds were allocated to the best projects in the world.
After a slow start in the early years, Vice-president Dr Jon Pritchard and Secretary Richard Price embarked upon a series of roadshows in the UK & Ireland to raise awareness of the Trust. Families that attended the roadshows started to raise money for us, then the Leventis Foundation from Cyprus, the Greek Artemis Society and LCH-Belgium joined us to build our budget for the first major project which began in 2005.
